Prepare for TV/radio interviews via Toastmasters

Here’s a great tip from Publicity Hound Kay Canavino, a photographer from Adams, Massachusetts, for anone who wants to sharpen their interviewing skills for radio and TV appearances:

“They can hone their speaking skills by joining a local chapter of Toastmasters. Talk about a big bang for your buck! It is the best way to get comfortable speaking in front of a crowd and learn how to think on your feet.”

Agreed. Toastmasters is a great way to launch a speaking career. If you want to learn how to make money by speaking, join one of my trade groups, the National Speakers Association.

BoomerWomenBlog.com needs promo ideas

Lois Carter Fay of Massanutten, Virginia writes:

“I just started a new blog, BoomerWomenBlog.com, that combines marketing ideas with Boomer Women. It’s also set up to maintain contact with a women’s group, Women’s Forum, that I run in my local community. What’s the best way to publicize my new blog and to generate heaps of traffic?”

John Kremer offers media contacts

Book marketing expert John Kremer is publishing a daily “Kremer 100 PR” newsletter featuring key media contacts—editors, book reviewers, radio and TV producers, magazines, newspapers, syndicated columnists, etc.

For only $30 a year, he’ll deliver a newsletter direct to your desktop Monday through Friday.

That’s a piddly $2.50 a month. When I first saw this price, I thought it was a typo. Then I saw John’s warning that the price goes up to $52 on January 1.

That’s still a steal! John is the master of book marketing—and he’s one of my kind of marketers who always under-promises and over-delivers.

Publicity for dancers: Online and offline tips

If you want publicity for your dance company, dance event or anything else related to dancing, check out these great tips on how to use social media press releases and open rehearsals to generate more publicity.

It’s courtesty of Doug Fox’s Great Dance Blog. Doug makes an important point: that dance coverage in traditional media like newspapers is eroding as circulation declines and newspapers cut back staff and pages.

He encourages the use of video in press releases. That’s one of the tips I shared in my free tutorial called “89 Ways to Write Powerful Press Releases.”

Doug also suggests that dancers use social networking sites like MySpace.

How to promote a horticulture degree

Elaine Grassbaugh of Columbus, Ohio writes:

“Agriculture colleges across the U.S. are experiencing low enrollment rates, especially in the area of horticulture. This is mainly due to the cost of a 4- or 5-year bachelor’s degree. Also, many two-year community colleges now offer this major.

“How can a department in a major land grant university (Ohio State) attract these students back to their four-year programs by increasing enrollment in these horticulture departments?”
