Joan, we have chatted about this so many times. As I have mentioned in the past. I don't talk about where I am going or what I have done until I get back.
It's just plain ignorance.
Fortunately, I have not had to learn the hard way as I imagine may have.

I have doubts on how valuable the site pleaserobme really is, on the other hand I can see a lot of benefits from businesses that are on Foursquare. Maybe instead of exposing people even more, they should educate them on how to use social tools.

Joan--
Great thoughts to keep in mind when we want to expand our social media outreach. While I have the opposite bent (not wanting to tell "strangers" much about me that even tips toward the personal), this is great info to keep in mind.
Thanks as usual!

One of my friends was just interviewed about this by her local NBC station.

Personally, I think the site is pretty stupid. It's not sharing any new information. The information is already out there on Twitter and FourSquare.

Yes, people need to think before they post, but honestly, Tweeting or using FourSquare to mark your location is no more dangerous that showing up at a public place for work. If you're a doctor, thieves know you're gone during the day. If you're the weatherman, the whole world sees you on the big screen and knows you're not at home. Tweeting that you're at the pizza place does not mean no one else is home, or that you're not leaving there in 2 minutes and headed straight home.

Now, if you were to tweet something like: "At the salon, about to get my nails done. Can't remember if I locked the front door!" then I'd say you're stupid and deserve to show up on PleaseRobMe.com lol
